A new time-lapse film shows progress at the University of South Wales Calon building

You don’t have to wait until the end of your project to create a time-lapse film! We have been capturing progress at the University of South Wales COMET project since it started in July 2024, and recently created a progress time-lapse video, showing how Calon – the new Computing, Engineering and Technology building being constructed on Treforest Campus – has risen to its full height of 23 metres during 2025.

Welsh for ‘heart’, Calon will be the new home for Computing, Engineering and Technology at USW. Calon will be at the centre of delivering education for the next generation of engineers, built environment professionals, and computer and data scientists, featuring more than 40 new innovative teaching, learning and research spaces, including electronics and hydraulics labs, a flight simulator, a robotics lab, clean and industrial research spaces, collaborative teaching spaces, as well as virtual reality capability, and a range of exhibition spaces. It is due to open in September 2026.

From ground level at the start of the year, to the topping out ceremony at the start of November – which marked Calon reaching its highest point – the site of the state-of-the-art new building has been a hive of activity throughout the year. And it’s all been captured by two of our time-lapse cameras! The cranes featured in the video arrived on campus in January, and have played a key role in supporting the 140 staff involved in building Calon.

The University of South Wales used the progress film as part of a post on social media, to promote the project. You can see the post here >

The Regenology time-lapse cameras remain in place, and will capture the completion of the project. With cladding now being added to the building, 2026 will see the completion of the project ready for the building to be open for learning and teaching next autumn.
